Babalu Donates to Stewpot

A brand new restaurant in Fondren opened its doors last month to rave reviews – and opened its wallet to charity. Babalu Tacos & Tapas recently donated their first day’s net profits to two local charities, Stewpot Ministries and Friends of Children’s Hospital. Co-owner Bill Latham said the company has done this with restaurant openings in the past and feel that giving back to the community is a great way to begin a new venture. Stewpot, he said, was a natural fit and the Children’s Hospital has always been a charity that they have felt strongly about supporting. Latham adds that in the future, they would be open to helping other charities through such an event as this.

Babalu has already become a favorite for its unique atmosphere and interesting menu, gourmet tacos and tapas (Spanish for ‘small plates.’) Latham says the response has simply been overwhelming. He told us, “It is the busiest opening that I have ever had. People feel as though they have left the city and they are in Miami, California, even Havanna.” Ingredients are fresh, and handmade tortillas, guacamole, and specialty drinks are highlighted. In addition to the food, the atmosphere is an industrial retro look that is very eclectic Fondren. Latham says the concept fit Fondren like a hand in glove. “It’s a great way to escape for just a little while.”
